In 2013, Pomelo’s founder Chris Muhlestein found himself in a pinch. In his words:
“My brother Scott and I had dropped off our laundry at a laundromat in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Upon returning to pick up our laundry, it had been lost and we were without any clothes and our bus + boat trip in Laos was scheduled to leave later that day. We left, with just the clothes on our backs, and headed to Laos. When we arrived in Luang Prabang, Laos a few days later we started to buy some new clothes and found a lady selling underwear on the street. Scott and I both bought enough underwear for the week and after we paid the bill, the shopkeeper began to pack up what was left of her inventory and head home. I asked her why and she said, “I made enough for today, I’m going to go home and eat with my family.”
In our world of grow, grow, grow, scale, scale, scale, scale… this chance encounter changed me. You rarely see people stop when they have enough. I want to try that approach with this membership.
I thought it would be nice to settle on a number and not push for growth, but instead push for building a community with quality. If you’re lucky enough to be one of the first to join Pomelo Passport, you’ll get the very best of our service: you’ll meet our friends across the world, learn from our team’s travel expertise, and get insider knowledge on how to travel to some of the most remote places in the world. Some of the most remote and rural parts of the world deserve our respect, and I can’t imagine sending our entire email list to some of these places. That would be irresponsible. Sometimes it’s good for something to be small.”
